Power companies train responders...
Representatives from Cedar-Knox Public Power, Hartington and Northeast Power, Wayne were on hand for a training session for area firemen and EMT’s at the Crofton Fire Hall on Wednesday, July 15. One of the points of the course on electrical safety focused on what to do when there are downed power lines which can happen due to a motor vehicle accident, a storm or during the use of large farm machinery. It’s very important to be aware of your surroundings since there aren’t always sparks or sounds with downed wires. Anyone approaching such a scene should first call the closest power company and remain at least 50 feet away. If there is a person inside a vehicle or tractor under a downed power line, that person should remain in the vehicle until someone from the utility determines that it is safe to exit.
