Board considering new plans, bond

The Crofton Board of Education has begun revisiting a bond issue for expansion and repair projects at the Crofton Community Schools building.

The Board has updated its “Facility Improvement” plan on the school’s website, and posted a video for a special meeting that was held on July 31 with planners for the project, and review of three options for the process.

The options include primarily elementary site updates on the existing location, and some high school updates as well for additions of an ag classroom, new multipurpose room and locker rooms.

On the video, the presenter ran the board through a number of scenarios for another bond issue that could come as early as the end of this year – for anywhere from $10 million to $15 million as presented on the Hausmann Construction estimates provided on the website from July, 2023.
The presenter gave the board figures that might be considered for tax increases should the bond pass – with $100,000 values increasing taxes around $130 per year and $500,000 properties around $650 per year.

With the passage of LB 2 last year, the effect that bond can have on agricultural land has been reduced, which will also change the amounts that agricultural land owners may have to pay.
A number of Crofton area residents were at the special meeting as well and made comment toward the project.

The Board will have to call a special election yet this winter for an early 2024 bond request.
In March of 2022, the Board put forth a bond issue for $18.9 million, and it was voted down 492 (yes) to 711 (no).

Since that time, the Board has requested new plans from a new architect firm – Carlson West Pondrova, and new construction estimates from Hausmann Construction.
