The Crofton Warriors youth basketball teams had a day in Hartington at the Hartington-Newcastle tournament on Saturday, January 6. Games were played in the Hartington-Newcastle gymnasium, the Monsignor Warner Center, and the Holy Trinity gymnasium.

The boys had four teams at the tournament (7th/8th grades, 6th grade, 5th grade, and 4th grade) and the girls had two teams (6th grade and 5th grade). The seventh and eighth grade boys team competed in three tournament games, including a 40- 30 loss against Dakota Valley, a 44-18 win against Hartington-Newcastle, and a 38-32 loss against Wynot.

The sixth grade boys entered the tournament with five players. They had a bye in their first round and then fell to Hartington Cedar Catholic and Hartington-Newcastle. These boys played hard and showed improvement in both of their games.

The fourth grade boys earned second place. This started with their defeating Yankton 27-25 in overtime in game one. They then won 18-14 against Ponca to put them in the championship game. They squared off against Hartington Cedar Catholic, falling 36-20.

The sixth grade girls finished in third place. They defeated Wayne (12-6) then lost to Wisner-Pilger (15-14) in the winners’ bracket game. In the third place game, the team took down Bloomfield 22-14. The fifth grade girls played up against the Hartington-Newcastle sixth graders and then played the only other fifth grade team in the 5th-6th grade girls division: Hartington-Newcastle.

It was great to see all the Crofton kids competing with their teammates this past weekend. Keep up the good work!
