Facing a significant reduction in funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation, Cedar County Transit has found it necessary to raise fares for passengers effective January 1, 2026.
A 30 percent budget cut to public transportation was implemented in 2025 and Transit management together with Cedar County commissioners have been studying ways to continue providing quality service while staying within budget.
Cedar County Transit will continue to provide door-to-door service for residents of Cedar County and individuals in Knox County who reside within 30 miles from the Transit office in Hartington, which includes the towns of Crofton, Bloomfield and Wausa. Transit accepts all Nebraska DHHS programs and Medicaid companies for payment. Receipts are available for Veterans’ rides which can be tuned into the VA for reimbursement.
Fares will be calculated based on mileage from the Transit office in Hartington and are round trip. An example of a round trip fare from within Crofton to Yankton which previously was $8, will now be $13. Exact fare information can be obtained by calling the Transit office at 402-640-6147 or 402-254-9147 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Reservations for rides should be called in at least one week ahead when possible. Short notice reservations are scheduled as van and driver availability permits.
Other service changes may include multiple passengers riding in the same van along with varied pick-up and drop-off times in order to accommodate each passenger’s needs. Each passenger’s ride will include up to two stops. Additional stops will incur an extra charge.
Cedar County Transit strives to provide a valuable service to area residents at a reasonable cost and regrets any inconvenience for its passengers.
