Roundabout proposed at Hwy 81 and 12 intersection

The Nebraska Department of Transportation announced this week that they would be holding a comment period through March 19 for a proposed roundabout installation at the intersection of Highway 81 and Highway 12, just east of Crofton.

The intersection has a historically, and nationally mentioned, high accident and fatality rate, and the NDOT has planned to install the roundabout as early as the Summer of 2027, depending on public comment.

Individual letters were sent to landowners and residents around the intersection, and released online where many comments have already been made, but those comments need to be submitted to the NDOT before March 19 through the correct channels to “count” for the discussion.

Comments and information can be found at the NDOT website at ndot.info/32409 or by contacting the NDOT District 3 office at 402-370-3470.

According to the released information, “The proposed project would require the acquisition of additional property rights, which could include new right-of-way (ROW), control of access (CA), permanent easements (PE), and/or temporary easements (TE). If your property is impacted by this project, you will be contacted by a representative once the design footprint has been established. Access to adjacent properties would be maintained during construction but may be limited at times due to phasing requirements.”

To make comment:

“The public is encouraged to make suggestions or express concerns regarding this proposed project. Materials can be provided in alternative languages or formats. Comments will be collected through March 19, 2026. Written comments or requests should be submitted to: AJ Raaska, Public Involvement Specialist, Nebraska Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 94759, Lincoln, NE 68509-4759; aj.raaska@nebraska.gov; voice telephone (402) 479-4303, fax (402) 479-3989.”

The traffic volumes for Nebraska Highway 12 showed that the east-west portion takes 2,100 vehicles a day, with around 9 percent being heavy trucks.

The traffic volumes for US Highway 81 indicated that the north-west area takes 4,110 vehicles per day, and that 15 percent are regarded as heavy trucks.
