From the Knox County Sheriff’s Office
The Knox County Sheriff's Office would like to alert the public about two scams that are occurring.
The first one is a text to individuals about a toll road bill not being made. The letter looks legitimate and says it is from Lancaster County Courts.
The first red flag is that there isn't any toll roads in Nebraska that we are aware of.
The second red flag is that the address used is Lincoln, North Carolina.
The second scam that the Knox County Sheriff's Office was made aware of is probably more sophisticated than others.
The scammer will send you a text message stating that your name is being used for something illegal. If you call the number, the scammer will ask you to download the Teamviewer app (or similar app) onto your phone.
If you do this and then give them permission, they will have complete access and control of your phone.
With this app, the text message will also disappear from your phone making it very hard to trace.
Always use caution when contacting numbers sent via text or email, even if they look real.
