The Nebraska Department of Transportation will be hosting a community engagement meeting in Crofton on Monday, May 11 to address the proposed roundabout on the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 81.
The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a presentation planned for 5:30 p.m. at the Crofton City Auditorium in downtown Crofton.
From the mailer: “Join the NDOT to learn about roundabouts, how they work, why they improve safety and traffic flow and what they mean for your community. We invite you to this community engagement event to ask questions and get facts about rural single lane roundabouts. The proposed project … would reconstruct the intersection of U.S. Highway 81 and Nebraska Highway 12 in Cedar County into a roundabout.”
The intersection lies just east of Crofton on Highway 12, and has been estimated by the NDOT to cost around $7.4 million.
Questions can be directed to ndot.publicinvolvement@nebraska.gov or 402-471-4567.
Information regarding the proposed project will be made available on the NDOT website at ndot.info/32409. For those without internet access, information may be obtained through the contact above or at NDOT headquarters, 1500 Nebraska Parkway, Lincoln, NE 68502. For further information contact Kevin Domogalla, NDOT District 3 Engineer, (402)370-3470, kevin.domogalla@nebraska.gov.
From the website about the project:
“The purpose of this proposed project is to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.
The need for roundabout installation on this project is based on crash trends present on this intersection of US-81 and N-12 that are deemed significant enough to warrant a mitigation strategy. Proposed improvements would also consist of lighting, culvert work, curb and gutter/storm sewer. Reconstruction of the intersection into a roundabout would include removal and replacement of pavement.
Grading would be required for the entire length of the project. The proposed project would require the acquisition of additional property rights, which could include new right-of-way (ROW), control of access (CA), permanent easements (PE), and/or temporary easements (TE). If your property is impacted by this project, you will be contacted by a representative once the design footprint has been established.
Access to adjacent properties would be maintained during construction but may be limited at times due to phasing requirements. Wetland and/or other water resource impacts are anticipated and compensatory wetland mitigation may be required.
The majority of the project would be completed under traffic with the use of a temporary road; however, the west portion of N-12 would be temporarily closed due to roundabout construction. While the west portion of N-12 is temporarily closed, a designated detour would be provided utilizing US-81, Nebraska Highway 121 (N-121), and N-12.
Construction for the proposed project could begin as early as summer of 2027 and be completed by fall of 2027.”
