The Plainview Lady Pirates went 0-2 this past week to see their regular-season record fall to 3-5 going into the holiday moratorium.

Most recently, the Lady Pirates took on the Elkhorn Valley Falcons in Plainview on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Against the Falcons, the Pirates got out to a slow start in the first quarter as the Falcons brought serious intensity out of the locker room.

No matter what the Pirates threw at their opponents, the Falcons were able to adjust, and when the quarter break came, the Pirates saw themselves down 11-3.

Down by eight, the Pirates didn’t hang their heads and managed to come out with a fire under them in quarter two.

In the second quarter, the Falcons stayed hot on offense but couldn’t figure out a way to stop the Pirates, who had found their rhythm. Behind solid shot selection and unselfish play, the Pirates were able to outscore the Flacons 15-14 in the quarter to decrease their deficit to 25-18 at the half.

Down by just seven points to the undefeated Falcons, the Pirates were set up nicely for a shot at the upset, but the Falcons had other plans.

In the third, the Pirates struggled to find open looks and couldn’t find a way to stop the Falcons’ scorching offense.

After being outscored 19-1 in the third quarter, the Pirates entered the final eight minutes of play down 44-19.

Down by 25, the Lady Pirates continued to fight in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons refused to be stopped.

With their highest-scoring quarter of the game, the Falcons were able to close out the contest and hand the Lady Pirates the 66-26 loss in Plainview.

Prior to their loss at home to the Falcons, the Lady Pirates set sail for Laurel to take on the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (LCC) Lady Bears on Friday, Dec. 19.

Against the Bears, a rough first quarter once again forced the Lady Pirates into an early deficit.

In the first, the Bears looked comfortable on their home court. While the Pirates worked hard, they couldn’t get shots to fall and entered the second quarter down 15-7.

With an eight-point deficit, the Lady Pirates managed to turn things around in the second quarter offensively but couldn’t find a way to get the defensive stops they needed.

So despite putting up 13 points in the quarter, the Lady Pirates entered halftime down 33-20.

With a 13-point deficit, the Lady Pirates regrouped at halftime and came out of the locker room ready to play.

Despite their struggles in the first half, the Pirates were relentless in the third quarter and managed to outscore the Lady Bears 11-10 in the quarter to decrease their deficit going into the fourth.

With momentum back on their side, the Lady Pirates put up a strong fight in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bears refused to allow them to get any closer. So despite putting up a solid 13-point performance in the fourth, the Lady Pirates were handed a 59-44 loss on the road.
